Should I Outsource App Development? How? Meet Adam Weil from White Rabbit

App Development: The Process

Afraid to tackle app development for your clients? Don’t be, because this can be a very lucrative field with less competition than other services you might offer.

According to Adam Weil, the process of building an app often begins with a client simply trying to figure out what type they need in the first place. iOS and Android apps tend to be more expensive, but can also be a smoother process to create. That said, Adam also notes that the technology for progressive web apps on the Internet has really improved.

In fact, Adam thinks it can often be a good idea to start out with a web app to test and prove the concept first.

“Progressive web apps are really exciting,” he says. “We love to be a part of those projects.”

Outsourcing App Development

App development isn’t nearly as common as web development. Lots of agency owners simply write them off, thinking they’re too complex or difficult to pull off. This is a shame, because Adam insists they’re such fun projects. Plus, it can be very fruitful for agency owners to be able to offer app development—-they can charge more while also giving the client a super exciting, super niche product.

“It’s really a win, win, win,” he says.

To get started, Adam says to bring in his team (or your chosen developer) as early in the process as possible. That way, they can let you know if it makes more sense to use a progressive web app or do a full native build.

Just as important, a simple ‘meet, greet, and discuss’ can help determine the feasibility of your project, while getting on the same page regarding scope and what’s actually possible.

“I think it all starts with a conversation,” says Adam. “Especially if you’re getting into custom, boundary-pushing ideas, then going through that discovery process is really necessary.”

How To Develop Agency Partnerships

Earlier in his career, Adam really struggled with agency partnerships. He found it particularly challenging to find developers, designers, and other creators who understand not just his vision, but also his work ethic and business practices (again, we bet many of you can relate!).

One thing that Adam has learned is that transparency is key. “We track every minute,” he says of his own agency. And like us, Adam highly values the Project Managers on his team.

Communication is key too, as is finding flexible Project Managers who are able to build long-term relationships with clients. Project Managers can help with client onboarding (snag our free Onboarding Checklist here), and with all the important relationship-building work that comes after.

“In my opinion, project management is one of the most important roles in our company,” he says. “Our technical Project Managers are extremely flexible.”

We wholeheartedly agree! That’s why we train our unicorn-status Account Managers to handle everything from project management to daily client communication, and even client gifting
